The Assistive Technology Program utilizes any device that helps an individual with disabilities to gain better access to his/her environment. The Assistive Technology Program will also provide assistive technology assessments and consultations by a trained Assistive Technology Specialist. The Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center has a number of assistive/adaptive devices available for loan. It is our belief that by providing an array of assistive technology service "close to home", we will be able to provide a much needed service to individuals/families in the Cumberland Valley area.

The Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Assistive Technology Program was initiated in June 1997 to enhance assistive technology service delivery in Southeastern Kentucky. In the Fall of 1997 the assistive technology program was asked to participate with the Kentucky Assistive Technology Services network (KATS), becoming one of two pilot sites for the Appalachian Assistive Technology Consortium.

Mission: The CRCCC Assistive Technology Program seeks to provide information about, and access to assistive technology services in Southeastern Kentucky; and seeks to increase community awareness regarding the opportunities made possible through assistive technology.

Service Area: The CRCCC Assistive Technology Program serves the Southeastern Kentucky Counties of Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle and Whitley.

Services Provided:

• Assistive technology assessments, services, and consultation
• Augmentative communication assessments, services and consultation
• Inservice training and workshops
• Materials development for use with AT and AAC devices
• Computer based instruction Parent training and information IEP planning and meetings
• Computer lab and loan library access

Staff:

• An AT Specialist and Speech Therapist (MA, CCC-SLP)
• A Licensed Occupational Therapist
• A Service Coordinator

WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?

Assistive Technology refers to any device or piece of equipment that allows an individual with disabilities to interact with his/her environment in a more functional way. Assistive devices may include low-tech solutions, environmental adaptations, high tech communication devices or computers, and anything in between. There are many types of assistive technology devices that can empower the lives of individuals with disabilities.

• Seating and positioning devices such as adapted seating and standers enable an individual to find the most functional position for accessing their environment.
• Mobility devices such as walkers and wheelchairs allow those with physical disabilities to move beyond their immediate environments for participation in the larger community.
• Communication devices allow those with communication disabilities to interact with others and effectively communicate their needs.
• Computer adaptations allow individuals with physical or sensory disabilities to access computers and the Internet, opening up great opportunities.
• Self-help devices allow those with physical or sensory disabilities to become more independent with daily living and work skills.
